Articles can have six states:

• Published and Current - article is published and is viewable by site visitors.


• Not Published - article is unpublished and is not viewable by the site visitors.


• Published, but is Pending - article has been approved for publication at the Start Publishing time and date set within the Publishing Tab options of the article and will become viewable at that time.


• Published, but has Expired - article is published but that it has reached the Finish Publishing time and date as set in the Publishing Tab options of the article and is no longer viewable by the site visitors.


• Archived - article has been placed in the archived state and is no longer accessible by regular menu items or searches and is not viewable by site visitors unless the archive module or the special archive menu item is used.


• Lastly, articles can be trashed and until the trash is emptied are only accessible through the control panel.

When articles expire, they are not automatically archived. They can be manually archived through the article manager in the Joomla control panel. Or, you can use AutoArchive2 to automatically archive your expired articles.

The Archive Module shows links directing the user to the calendar months which contain content items that have been archived. After you have changed the status of a content item to "Archived," this list will be automatically generated. Click on the month link in the list to display the archived content items in a "blog" format. All archived content items will be displayed.

The menu item type under Articles in the Menu Item Manager called Archive Article List is used to show a list of Articles that have been Archived and can be searched by date. Archived articles are no longer published but are still stored on the site. Articles are Archived using the Article Manager screen. Note that Articles assigned to the "Uncategorized" Section will not show on the Archived Article List layout.
